The Situation
For a busy Portland-area law firm, mobility isn’t optional — it’s how the work gets done. Attorneys move between their office, the courthouse, client sites, and home on a daily basis. At every location, they need access to the same case files, documents, and internal systems.
For years, that meant one thing: connecting to the VPN first. And for years, that friction quietly cost the firm time, focus, and productivity. Attorneys in a hurry — at a courthouse, in a client meeting, trying to pull a document at exactly the wrong moment — found themselves wrestling with a connection process that felt like it was working against them, not for them.

The Challenge
The core tension was a difficult one to resolve: law firms handle some of the most sensitive documents in existence. Client confidentiality isn’t optional, and commercially available cloud storage solutions — however convenient — weren’t an option for this firm’s document management needs. Files had to stay on their internal file server, under their control.
At the same time, requiring attorneys to connect to a traditional VPN every time they needed to access a file created real-world friction that compounded across every workday. Every extra step, every failed connection, every moment spent troubleshooting remote access instead of doing legal work was a small but real cost to the firm’s productivity and to attorney morale.
The solution needed to be simultaneously more secure than cloud storage and more seamless than VPN. That’s a narrow target.
The Solution
After assessing the firm’s environment, ClarionIT identified SMB over QUIC — a relatively new capability introduced in Microsoft Windows Server 2025 — as the right fit for this situation.
SMB over QUIC allows users to map a network drive directly to their internal file server from any location, over the internet, without first connecting to a VPN. The connection is encrypted, authenticated, and seamless — from the user’s perspective, it works exactly like being in the office. From a security perspective, it uses modern TLS 1.3 encryption and certificate-based authentication, meeting the firm’s strict confidentiality requirements.
One additional challenge emerged during implementation: the firm’s internet service provider did not offer a static IP address, which is typically required for this type of external connection. ClarionIT resolved this by deploying a dynamic DNS service that automatically updates the firm’s external hostname whenever their IP address changes — eliminating the dependency on a static IP without any impact on end users.
The entire implementation — assessment, configuration, testing, and rollout — was completed in under one week.
SMB over QUIC delivered what seemed like an impossible combination: the security of staying on-premises with the simplicity of cloud access. No VPN required.
The Results
The impact was immediate and felt across the entire team. Attorneys who had previously avoided accessing files remotely because of the friction now connect routinely from wherever they are — courthouse, home, client site — without a second thought.
Work that previously got deferred until someone was back in the office now gets done in the moment. Documents get pulled, reviewed, and filed without interruption. The firm’s ability to be responsive to clients improved, and the low-grade frustration that had become background noise in the firm’s daily operations simply went away.
Critically, none of this came at the expense of security. Sensitive client documents remain on the firm’s own infrastructure, under their control, with no exposure to third-party cloud storage providers. The solution is more secure than the VPN it replaced and dramatically easier to use.
